Pricing small repair and craft jobs
Materials, time and the small tasks around each job: a simple way to price work that is worth doing.
Small jobs are easy to underprice because each one feels minor. Added up, they can cost you more than they pay.
Three parts of a price
- Materials: what you use, plus a little for waste.
- Time: the work itself, plus messages, pickup and delivery.
- Overheads: tool wear, fees, a share of what you set aside for tax.
| Item | Illustrative example |
|---|---|
| Materials | 12 |
| Time: 2.5 h at your chosen rate of 18 | 45 |
| Overheads | 8 |
| Price | 65 |
If the market will not pay that price, that is useful information too: it may be a job to skip rather than to discount.
